Description

Alec Guinness and Dirk Bogarde star in this naval drama set aboard a British warship during the French Revolutionary Wars. Captain Crawford (Guinness) is respected by his crew as a fair and just leader of men but his second-in-command, Lieutenant Scott-Padget (Bogarde), is a brutal sadist who likes to see the sailors suffer. When Crawford is injured, Scott-Padget takes command but his actions soon spark a mutiny which leads to his death.

However, the men remain loyal to Crawford and to their country and acquit themselves honourably in battle, giving Crawford hope that their inevitable punishment can be averted. The cast also includes Anthony Quayle, Maurice Denham and Nigel Stock.
