Ashamed of this disfigurement Gwynplaine only ever shows his smile when on stage.

When it transpires that Gwynplaine is descended from royalty he is offered an opportunity to marry Duchess Josiana (Olga Baclanova). However. agreeing to the marriage will mean turning his back on the circus as well as ending his relationship with Dea (Mary Philbin), the only person that Gwynplaine feels is capable of truly loving him.
